New Year’s Resolutions for You and Your Dog

Happy New Year! Are you starting out 2016 by making some resolutions? Why not include your dog in your goals for the new year? Below, a Cedar Park, TX vet offers a few suggestions for resolutions you and Fido can do together.

Be Active

Exercise is very important to Fido’s health. It’s important for you, too! Proper activity is a great goal for the new year. Your dog’s exercise needs will depend on his weight, his age, and overall health, so check with your vet before starting a fitness regime with your furry best friend.

Be Happy

Personal happiness is a wonderful goal to strive for, and our furry friends can certainly help! There’s no mistaking Fido’s joy for anything other than cheer: that wagging tail, the doggy smile, and the happy bounce are all clear signs of a happy dog. Man’s Best Friend also has a special way of spreading his happiness. It’s hard not to smile at the sight of a gleeful pooch. Keep that furry tail going by taking time each day to play with and pet your canine pal.

Learn New Things

Does Fido know basic doggy obedience commands yet? There are five basic commands that your canine pal should know. These commands, which are Sit, Stay, Come, Heel, and Lay Down, are very important, both for good petiquette and for safety reasons. Of course, if your furry buddy has these down, you can teach him some cute tricks, or try more advanced training. While you’re at it, take a class in something new, or just read books or watch documentaries about something new that interests you.

Go Somewhere New

Dogs love to explore! Take Fido for a walk in a new park or on a pretty trail this year. Let him sniff the grass, and just enjoy the sunshine and fresh air. It will be good for you, too!

Try New Foods

Our canine pals aren’t shy about sampling new dishes! Broaden your palette this year by trying some different foods, or making a new recipe. Just be sure to do some research before giving Fido anything new, to be sure it’s safe for your furry best friend to eat.
